The copy-text for the ‘pocket’ edition of Farmer Giles of Ham seems to have been first made for Tales from the Perilous Realm, in which a number of errors were introduced. The 1999 edition of Farmer Giles, which we prepared for its fiftieth anniversary, included the text of the story reproduced in facsimile from the original, 1949 printing; our concern, in both 1999 and 2014, was solely with our supplemental material and notes – especially that page references were correct in the new setting – and with an added note for the Pauline Baynes ‘Gallery’. It has only now come to our attention that these twelve points need correction:
p. 51, l. 16: For ‘one or two persons of importance’ read ‘one or two other persons of importance’.
p. 62, l. 7: For ‘let that drafted dog in’ read ‘let that dratted dog in’.
p. 72, l. 3: For ‘The song and tales of his deeds’ read ‘The songs and tales of his deeds’.
p. 74, l. 17: For ‘able to take credit’ read ‘able to take the credit’.
p. 77, l. 9: For ‘The work took them all the rest of the day’ read ‘The work took them all the rest of that day’.
p. 86, l. 17: For ‘shot of you’ read ‘shut of you’.
p. 86, ll. 21–2: For ‘circled flashing the air’ read ‘circled flashing in the air’.
p. 99, l. 6: For ‘victuals and drinks’ read ‘victuals and drink’.
p. 105, l. 17: For ‘dropped back in line’ read ‘dropped back in the line’.
p. 108, ll. 9–10: For ‘in the village street’ read ‘in the village high-street’.
p. 126, ll. 1–2: For ‘got up from the bridge’ read ‘got up from under the bridge’.
p. 132, l. 14: For ‘is folly without warrant’ read ‘is a folly without warrant’.
We must also note that the reading given in the 2014 edition on p. 90, l. 9, ‘Now you’re talking’, differs from that in the 1949 text, which has ‘Now you talking’. The latter is almost certainly in error; in the second (1976) edition of Farmer Giles of Ham this became ‘Now you’re talking’. In the earlier (manuscript) version of the story, p. 157 of the 2014 edition, the dialogue reads ‘Now you are talking’.
